When we decided to give my daughter’s bedroom a makeover, I knew I wanted it to feel playful, cozy, and full of personality while still being a space she could grow into. Since she absolutely loves Elmo, that became the inspiration behind the room, but I wanted the design to feel soft and whimsical rather than overly themed.

The goal was to create a bedroom that felt bright, welcoming, and fun, with plenty of custom details that reflected her personality. From fresh paint and deep cleaning to a cloud-shaped bed and a colorful statement rug, every step helped transform the room into a space that feels completely her own.

Here’s a look at everything that has gone into the makeover so far.

Refreshing the Room with Paint and a Deep Clean

View tutorial

Before bringing in any new furniture or decor, the room needed a fresh start.

The first step was a thorough deep clean. I wiped down the walls, baseboards, trim, windows, and radiator to remove years of dust and buildup. Starting with a clean surface helps paint adhere better and creates a much nicer final result.

For the walls, I chose a soft blush pink paint that adds warmth without overwhelming the room. The ceiling received a fresh coat of bright white paint to help the space feel larger and more open.

One challenge was the radiator. Since standard wall paint isn’t designed for high temperatures, I used a heat-resistant spray paint specifically made for metal surfaces. This helped refresh the radiator while ensuring the finish remains durable and safe.

Painting a room takes more supplies than most people realize. Along the way, I used:

This step alone completely changed the look and feel of the room and created the perfect foundation for the rest of the makeover.

Creating a Cozy Sleep Space

The bed is one of the biggest focal points in the room, so I wanted something that felt both functional and magical.

I chose a beautiful cloud-shaped bed frame that instantly gives the room a soft and whimsical look. One thing I didn’t realize when ordering it was that the bed frame did not include slats, so I had to purchase a separate set to properly support the mattress. If you’re shopping for a similar bed, definitely double-check whether slats are included before ordering.

To complete the setup, I added:

The canopy helps create a cozy little retreat while adding a soft, feminine touch that fits perfectly with the room’s overall aesthetic. Combined with the cloud bed, it makes the entire sleep area feel extra special.

Choosing a Statement Rug

One of my favorite pieces in the room so far is the rug.

I ordered this rug from Etsy, and it immediately became one of the first things people notice when they walk into the room. The combination of light pink, darker pink, and soft orange tones ties the entire design together and adds warmth to the space.

Because the rug covers such a large portion of the floor, it helps anchor the room and creates a cozy place for playing, reading, and relaxing. It also adds a fun pop of color that complements the soft blush walls while making the room feel cheerful and inviting.

The rug has quickly become a standout feature and serves as the perfect foundation for the rest of the decor.

What’s Next?

The makeover is still a work in progress, and there are several exciting additions planned for the room.

One of the biggest features will be a custom Elmo-inspired wall design with clouds. To make it even more personal, the design will be customized with my daughter’s name, creating a one-of-a-kind feature wall that feels special to her.

I’ll continue updating this post as new furniture, decor, storage solutions, and custom details are added to complete the space.
