When we decided to give my daughter’s bedroom a makeover, I knew I wanted it to feel playful, cozy, and full of personality while still being a space she could grow into. Since she absolutely loves Elmo, that became the inspiration behind the room, but I wanted the design to feel soft and whimsical rather than overly themed.
The goal was to create a bedroom that felt bright, welcoming, and fun, with plenty of custom details that reflected her personality. From fresh paint and deep cleaning to a cloud-shaped bed and a colorful statement rug, every step helped transform the room into a space that feels completely her own.
Here’s a look at everything that has gone into the makeover:

1
Before bringing in any new furniture or decor, the room needed a fresh start.
The first step was a thorough deep clean. I wiped down the walls, baseboards, trim, windows, and radiator to remove years of dust and buildup. Starting with a clean surface helps paint adhere better and creates a much nicer final result.
For the walls, I chose a soft blush pink paint that adds warmth without overwhelming the room. The ceiling received a fresh coat of bright white paint to help the space feel larger and more open.
One challenge was the radiator. Since standard wall paint isn’t designed for high temperatures, I used a heat-resistant spray paint specifically made for metal surfaces. This helped refresh the radiator while ensuring the finish remains durable and safe.
Painting a room takes more supplies than most people realize. Along the way, I used:
- Clorox cleaning products for deep cleaning
- Shark vacuum for removing dust and debris
- Paint roller kit with extension pole
- Drop cloths to protect the floors
- Ladder for reaching ceilings and high corners
- Blush pink wall paint
- White ceiling paint
- Heat-resistant radiator spray paint
This step alone completely changed the look and feel of the room and created the perfect foundation for the rest of the makeover.

The bed is one of the biggest focal points in the room, so I wanted something that felt both functional and magical.
I chose a beautiful cloud-shaped bed frame that instantly gives the room a soft and whimsical look. One thing I didn’t realize when ordering it was that the bed frame did not include slats, so I had to purchase a separate set of slats to properly support the mattress. If you’re shopping for a similar bed, definitely double-check whether slats are included before ordering.
To complete the setup, I added:
The canopy helps create a cozy little retreat while adding a soft, feminine touch that fits perfectly with the room’s overall aesthetic. Combined with the cloud bed, it makes the entire sleep area feel extra special.

I ordered this rug from Etsy, and it immediately became one of the first things people notice when they walk into the room. The combination of light pink, darker pink, and soft orange tones ties the entire design together and adds warmth to the space.
Because the rug covers such a large portion of the floor, it helps anchor the room and creates a cozy place for playing, reading, and relaxing. It also adds a fun pop of color that complements the soft blush walls while making the room feel cheerful and inviting.
The rug has quickly become a standout feature and serves as the perfect foundation for the rest of the decor.

One of my favorite additions to this Elmo bedroom makeover is the giant magnetic wall. I wanted something that would turn an ordinary wall into a fun play space while still looking intentional with the rest of the room’s design.
Instead of buying a standard magnetic board, I worked directly with a manufacturer to have a magnetic wall custom made to fit the exact dimensions of the room. I actually had to message them directly on the platform to ask for the specific measurements I needed, and they were incredibly responsive. I personally got to work with someone named Kira, and she was great! She even sent me pictures throughout the production process, which made the whole experience feel really collaborative and reassuring. This allowed me to cover a much larger area than anything I could find in stores, creating an oversized play surface that feels like part of the room instead of an accessory. When it came time to install it, I used the level app on my phone to make sure everything was perfectly straight and not going sideways, which really helped keep the final look clean and polished.
The best part is that the magnetic wall serves two purposes. It acts as wall decor while also giving my daughter a place to play, practice letters, create scenes, and interact with her favorite characters every day.
If you’re planning your own themed bedroom, a custom magnetic wall is definitely worth considering because it grows with your child and can easily be updated with new magnets as their interests change.

Letter magnets are a classic learning toy, but I wanted ours to feel like they truly belonged in the room.
There are plenty of colorful alphabet magnets available online, but I had a very specific color palette in mind that matched the rest of our Elmo bedroom. Since I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for, I had to contact a manufacturer directly to place a custom order. I was in touch with someone named Davy, who was incredibly helpful and even shared pictures throughout the production process, which I really appreciated.
One thing I highly recommend is ordering multiple copies of each letter. I ordered two uppercase letters and three lowercase letters in every color. This gives us enough letters to spell simple words, names, and little messages without constantly running out of common letters.
Not only do they look beautiful displayed on the magnetic wall, but they also encourage early literacy through everyday play. My daughter loves moving them around, matching colors, and eventually she’ll be able to practice spelling words as she grows.

To make the room feel cohesive without overwhelming the space, I added several Elmo illustrations throughout the bedroom. I personally created all of the illustrations myself. Unfortunately, due to copyright reasons, I can’t share those exact designs, but I’ve seen many Etsy shops offering similar illustration styles.
Once I finished designing the illustrations, I arranged them all together on a banner layout and had it printed at CVS. After printing, I carefully cut each piece myself and used self-adhesive dots to place them on the wall.
One of my favorite details is having Elmo sitting on the top of the magnetic wall banner. It almost looks like he’s peeking into the room and watching all the fun happening below.
These little details are what really transform the bedroom from simply “Elmo themed” into a space that feels like stepping into Sesame Street.

I added a lightweight Elmo cutout that my daughter can easily move around by herself. Some days Elmo is sitting beside her bed while she reads. Other days he’s watching her build with magnetic tiles or joining her for pretend tea parties.
Because the cutout isn’t permanently attached to the wall, it becomes part of her imaginative play instead of simply being decoration. She talks to him, moves him from room to room, and treats him like a real character.
It’s such a simple addition, but it brings so much personality to the space and makes the room feel even more magical.

Every themed room deserves one statement piece, and for us, it was a custom sign that I personalized to say my daughter’s name, “Jenayah’s World.”
This sign became the perfect focal point above the play area and instantly made the room feel complete. I made it myself so I could control the size, colors, and overall style to match the rest of the decor.
I do want to mention (again) that I’m not able to share the sign file or take custom orders for it due to copyright reasons. However, there are many talented Etsy shops that offer similar custom sign services, so I definitely recommend checking there if you’re looking to create something personalized for your own space.

This was the nice finishing touch of the bedroom, placed right on her door.
Adding a Sesame Street sign there makes the space feel complete and gives the room its own identity, just like the iconic street sign from the show. It’s a simple detail, but it makes the entrance feel extra special and immersive.
Custom door signs are also a great way to personalize a bedroom since you can choose materials, fonts, and colors that match your overall design while creating a welcoming entrance to your child’s themed space.

Final Thoughts on this Elmo Bedroom Makeover
Creating this Elmo bedroom has been one of my favorite room makeovers because it isn’t just a place to sleep… it’s a space designed for imagination, learning, and everyday play.
From the oversized magnetic wall and custom alphabet magnets to the movable Elmo cutout and personalized signs, every detail was chosen to make the room interactive while still feeling organized and beautiful.
The best part is seeing my daughter use the room exactly as I hoped she would. She moves Elmo around, practices with her letter magnets, creates little stories, and truly enjoys spending time in a space inspired by one of her favorite characters.
If you’re planning your own Elmo bedroom makeover, don’t be afraid to customize pieces to fit your space. Working with manufacturers allowed me to create exactly what I envisioned, and those custom touches are what made the room feel truly one of a kind.
